Open Streets comes to Southbridge this Earth Day Weekend

West Side Grows Together (WSGT) and the Urban Bike Project of Wilmington are excited to announce Open Streets Wilmington: New Castle Avenue occurring Saturday, April 22nd in the Southbridge neighborhood of Wilmington on New Castle Avenue between Pearl and A Streets.

Open Streets Wilmington is a collaborative initiative of the Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, WSGT, and the Open Streets Wilmington steering committee. Open Streets Wilmington’s first location of the 2023 season features New Castle Avenue.  During the event, the street will be closed to vehicular traffic and open to pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, skateboards, and more. This event will also feature crafts for children, a scavenger hunt, outdoor yoga and fitness classes, free bike rentals, children's activities, and much more.

This Saturday, April 22nd, community members may attend Open Streets Wilmington: New Castle Avenue between 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Open Streets Wilmington locations rotate throughout the city to highlight a different Wilmington neighborhood each summer and fall, April through October. For future Open Streets dates, locations, and activities, visit openstreetswilmington.org

Volunteers are still needed and are encouraged to sign up in shifts for Open Streets here

Laura Wilburn, Executive Director of the Urban Bike Project of Wilmington expresses, "It's been so inspiring to witness what these free events mean to our communities. There's so much joy and freedom and a little bit of awe, when someone steps into a street without having to look for cars or worry about their kids in traffic–when this space that's usually kind of off-limits to people gets transformed into a safe space for outdoor play. It creates so much room for connection and expression and movement. We're looking forward to another year of fun and fitness in Wilmington streets!"

Open Streets Wilmington is made possible with the support of the Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, Cornerstone West CDC, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware Blueprints for the Community, YMCA of Delaware, University of Delaware Living Lab, Nuestras Raíces Delaware, The Warehouse, Kingswood Community Center, The WRK Group, DJ Tim Dogg, WILMAPCO, Jefferson Street Center, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, the City of Wilmington, and individual donors.
